Funeral takes place this Friday in Monchique

Monchique writer António da Silva Carriço died this evening, aged 89, in Lisbon.

The wake takes place from this afternoon at the Igreja da Misericórdia in Monchique, and the funeral ceremonies will take place tomorrow, November 22, at 15 pm, at the Igreja Matriz.

António da Silva Carriço was born in Monchique, in 1930. As a student worker (drawer in an architecture office) he completed the General Liceus Course in Lisbon, where he then worked for two years in the Study Services of the National Statistics Institute.

He returned to Monchique as a City Council employee and, in 1961, was responsible for the Fixed Library of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, a place he occupied for thirty-two years. Over the next ten years, until 2003, he was in charge of the Municipal Library of Monchique.

He was a correspondent for Jornal Novidades and also for “O Século” and “Diário de Lisboa”.

In 1982 and 1990, he received honorable mentions at the Jogos Floral do Algarve, promoted by the Racal Clube de Silves, in the modalities of Lyric Poetry and Tale.

Since 1985, he was a columnist and editor of the Jornal de Monchique.

In 1995, he published his first book of chronicles, entitled Memory of Things, whose «objects of the chronicles and the themes they cover constitute, by the experiences they portray and the episodes they relate, a heritage and cultural record that, without nostalgia», preserves traditions, memories and identity of «an Algarve, in Portugal».

This work had its second edition in 2008. In 1996, it was awarded the 2nd Social Communication Prize, at national level, by the Algarve Tourism Region, for the article "O Prazer da Diferença".

In 1997, the Braga Journalists Club distinguished him with the Special Green Minho Award (single prize) sponsored by that Tourism Region, with the work «O Irresistível Fascínio do Verde», published in the Jornal de Monchique.

In the same year, he edited O Sabor da Vida, his second book of chronicles.

In 1998, at the invitation of the Portuguese Teachers Association, he participated in the 1st Regional Meeting of Portuguese Teachers with Algarve Writers and published the work «Sabina na Casa de Espelhos» in the number 1 of the Stilus Magazine.

In 2002, he won the 1st Manuel Teixeira Gomes Prize, instituted by the Portimão City Council, with the sponsorship of the Regional Delegation of Culture of the Algarve, awarded to the short story Entre o Corpo ea Rosa, his first work of fiction.

In 2004, the Municipal Council of Monchique gave its name to the Municipal Library, which was renamed Municipal Library António da Silva Carriço, given its contribution and the fact that it is a «preeminent figure in the cultural life of the municipality of Monchique» .

In 2005, he published his third book of chronicles: Portrait of Landscape as People.

He was Commissioner of the plastic arts exhibitions of the painter Zé Ventura, supported by “Faro National Capital of Culture” and by the Municipality of Monchique, and is the author of the text of the book Zé Ventura – As Cores do Tempo, awarded in 2007 at the London Book Festival.

In 2006, eight of her chronicles were included in the anthology Escritores Portugueses do Algarve, organized by Ilena Gonçalves.

In 2008, he wrote Uma Abertura de Alma for the work António Maria Callapez – a look at the South, a book-catalogue of the photography exhibition commemorating the centenary of his birth.

In 2014, he published the book Reflexos, with 13 Christmas tales, edited by Paulinas.

Silva Carriço is also referenced in the Chronological Dictionary of Portuguese Authors and his work is included in a school manual.

He was also director of the Monchique Group of the Corpo Nacional de Escutas and had a brief experience in the theater as a stage director. He was a director and founder member of the Academy of Heraldry of the Algarve. He participated in conferences, meetings and debates and has dispersed collaboration in magazines and newspapers, being a member of the Association of Journalists and Writers of the Algarve.
