Fires in protected areas burned a tenth less than usual

Ministry says that these numbers "confirm that the strategy for structural fire prevention has paid off"

The fires, which occurred throughout this year in protected areas, burned one less tenth of the usual, announced this Friday, 15 November, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action.

This year there were 384 forest fires in the protected areas and the burnt area was around one thousand hectares.

The area burned in 2019 was thus about one tenth of the average recorded over the last two decades (1800 hectares per year).

In a press release, the Ministry says that these numbers "confirm that the strategy for structural fire prevention has paid off."

«Between 2017 and 2019, the teams in the protected areas were reinforced with 75 new elements from the National Corps of Forestry Agents (CNF's), and with 75 new nature watchers», he exemplifies.

In 2017, the pilot project for structural fire fighting was launched in the Peneda-Gerês National Park.

In 2018, the pilot project was extended to five more protected areas and, in 2019, to eight new areas. Currently, there are ongoing projects in 14 Protected Areas.
