Carlos Sousa Oliveira (Instituto Superior Técnico) is the main guest

A workshop on the theme “Seismic risk, reality or fiction” ends this Monday, the 25th, at 16 pm, the first day of the Science and Technology Week, promoted by the Poeta António Aleixo Schools Group, from Portimão.

The workshop, scheduled for the Auditorium of the Museum of Portimão, will have as a guest Professor Carlos Sousa Oliveira (Higher Technical Institute), being moderated by Richard Marques, coordinator of the Municipal Civil Protection Service. The background of the initiative will be the 50th anniversary of the 1969 earthquake.

Professor Luís Mendes, from the Ciência Viva Club, from the Poeta António Aleixo Schools Group, explained to the Sul Informação that, “in this Science Week, under the motto “cultivate knowledge, cultivate friendship”, we tried to go further. It was not just our concern to promote contact between our students and scientists from the most diverse areas: medicine, chemical analysis, geology, civil protection. It was our main concern not to be alone in this gigantic struggle to promote the scientific literacy of our citizens». That is why it established a partnership with the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Portimão, which «has been a very important companion in the struggle».

The Scientific Culture Week, which runs until 28 November, also includes other workshops on the themes “Electronics and Arduino”, “Being an entrepreneur – risks and opportunities”, “The importance of laboratory work in scientific research”, “Geology , the work of geologists and the importance of preserving the geological heritage”, “Build your rocket” and “The hidden forms of minerals”, among others.

In addition to the Municipal Civil Protection Service and the Portimão City Council, the initiative of the Poeta António Aleixo Schools Group also involves the University of Minho Science School, the University of Minho 3Bs Institute and the A2 Chemical Analysis company.
