PSD deputies ask for exemption for nurserymen banned from shellfish

At stake total or partial bans on bivalve harvesting

The PSD deputies elected by the Algarve want the Government to suspend the charging of license fees to the Algarve nurserymen who are affected by the total or partial ban on bivalve harvesting, decreed by IPMA.

Cristóvão Norte, Rui Cristina and Ofélia Ramos speak of “hundreds of nurseries prevented from catching bivalves”, some for several months, as is the case of those who have nurseries in the area designated Olhão 3, where the ban is total “since 3 March ». However, they continue to pay fees, "which, in some cases, are in excess of well over 1000 euros per year".

"The ban in question results from the contamination of water by fecal coliforms, an aspect that has led nurseries and environmental associations to point out that the pollution is due to illegal and uncontrolled evictions that leave directly from the city of Olhão to the Ria Formosa, at various points , including the so-called Cais T», pointed out the Social Democrats.

On the other hand, they point out, «Mr. mayor of Olhão justifies the results with the operation of the previous WWTP – now deactivated».

“It is not understandable that responsibilities are not ascertained, even less that the injustice of charging people who are prevented from working and without their livelihood is committed. There have been complaints for years, I myself have echoed them in previous moments, but nothing has been done. It is a nightmare for these people and the condescension can only lead to destroying the economy of Ria Formosa and its productive potential”, said Cristóvão Norte.

The PSD deputies will ask, in a question to be sent to the Ministry of Environment, "that the collection of license fees from affected nurseries be suspended."
