Deputies from the Left Bloc João Vasconcelos and Sandra Cunha questioned the Algarve Chambers about the initiatives they have to support “women victims of domestic violence and their sons and daughters”.

The Blocist parliamentarians sent a request with several questions to the 16 municipal executives of the Algarve, as part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is marked today, the 25th.

«Violence against women and children, domestic violence, constitutes a reality on which it is urgent to intervene, and for this it is essential to mobilize all agents. The City Councils play an essential role here», they considered.

In this way, the Left Bloc wants to «assess which initiatives have been developed by the Municipal Councils of the Algarve to support victims of domestic violence, what steps are planned, namely in the provision of housing for victims of domestic violence and their sons and daughters, as well as in the creation of more shelters and emergency shelters».

According to BE, between 2014 and 2018 there were 141 femicides, while in 2019 the number of murders of women, victims of domestic or gender violence, was already 29.

Just over a month from the end of the year, as many women have been killed as in 2015, the second blackest year among the five whose data were recently revealed in the report of the Commission for Gender Equality (CIG) “Prevention and combating violence against women and domestic violence” – worse, only 2014, in which there were 43 femicides.

“According to the most recent Annual Report on Internal Security (RASI), in 2018 there were 26.483 reports of domestic violence, with 79% of victims being women and 84% of those reported being men. 78% of victims are over 25 years old; 94% of those denounced are over 25 years old», added the Left Bloc.
