Baixo Guadiana already has new ornithology guide

Each bird has a technical sheet with its characteristics and indicating its conservation status

The new “Bas Guadiana Ornithology Guide” was launched by the Odiana association on the 16th of November, during the II workshop of birdwatching.

This guide "is presented in an informative, technical and promotional way, with functionality for amateurs or mere observers, but also for professionals, such as ornithologists, covering six different languages: Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, German and Dutch" , explains Odiana.

“This is a pocket-sized, practical product that includes the 40 most observable species in and around the territory, differentiated by residents, winterers, breeding migrants, breeding, breeding and visiting summers”, he adds.

Each bird has a technical sheet with its characteristics and indicating its conservation status.

“One of the innovative points is that each technical sheet suggests the GPS coordinates of the hotspots most recommendable for your observation'.

Another novelty is that, for each bird, and by reading an associated QR Code, it is possible to hear the song, and the reader can share the sounds of the birds he finds and observes.

This new tool (the previous «Bas Guadiana Nature and Landscape Ornithology Guide», emerged in 2009 from a partnership with Associação Terras do Baixo Guadiana), arises because Baixo Guadiana is one of the main ornithology destinations in the country, with hotspots which are included in the National Network of Protected Areas (RNAP) and in the Natura 2000 Network.

«We are talking about the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, the Reserva do Sapal de Castro Marim and VRSA, the National Forest of Litoral Dunes of VRSA, the National Forest of Terras da Ordem, the River Guadiana and adjacent streams, and the Natural Park of Vale of the Guadiana”, explains Odiana.

The Ornithology Guide is a product developed by this association in a strategy to promote Nature Tourism.

"It is a result of the growing importance of birdwatching for the territory, not only for its potential, but for its relevance in terms of diversifying the offer and combating seasonality in the territory, confirming Baixo Guadiana as a nature tourism area par excellence" , attests Sílvia Madeira, executive director of Associação Odiana.

This Guide also had the collaboration of technical content from Agostinho Gomes and the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests with the scientific review.

The publication is an action integrated in the PROMOTURIS project, – Tourism and Cultural Promotion Plan, financed by CRESC Algarve2020.
