Loulé Salt-Gema Mine starts receiving tourist visits

Entrance tickets cost between 25 euros and 15 euros

The Sal-Gema Mine, in Loulé, will open for tourist visits, as of next Monday, 7 October.

Thus, from that day onwards, Mina will be open for visits from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 18:00 pm. Entrance tickets cost between 15 and 25 euros.

After the Allgarve program (2008 and 2009), the Loulé Salt-Gema Mine has, in recent years, limited its academic visits, opening only to schools, universities and under the Ciência Viva no Verão program.

With a larger project currently being planned for the revitalization of this space for tourism purposes, the Sal-Gema Mine in Loulé is once again opening its doors to the general public.

All interested can, in a tour interpreted in two hours, discover the world of the underground rock salt mine with more than 45 kilometers of galleries and dive into the only visitable Portuguese mine that is located below sea level.

With its opening, all visitors will be able to learn about the history of this space, located at 230 meters deep, admire geological formations with 230 million years.

For this purpose, an interpretation route with about 1,3 kilometers inside the mine was created, where, with the help of specialized guides, all visitors are invited to learn about ancient and current mining processes.

To continue this journey into the interior of the earth, Tech Salt SA, concessionaire of the Sal-Gema de Loulé mines, established a partnership with the tourist company Picturesque Journey and, along this route, in addition to revealing the geological importance of this mine in the context of the region, the numerous applications of rock salt used by man throughout history, up to the present, will be discussed.
