Lagos celebrates Municipal Festivals with tributes and concert by Rui Massena

Lagos celebrates, on the 26th and 27th of October, the Festas do Município, with tributes and a concert by the Rui Massena Trio. 

The program on the 26th starts at 15 pm with the visit “To the Meeting of Time and Places of São Gonçalo de Lagos”, where it will be possible to learn a little more about the life and legacy of the city's patron saint, as well as the experiences of Lagos in the 00th century.

Before concluding the visit, there will still be time to attend the inauguration of the Exhibition “São Gonçalo de Lagos – Patron Saint of Lagos (n.1360) and Torres Vedras (f.1422) – Life and Work”, which is scheduled for 17:30 pm , in the old Town Hall.

Also in the afternoon, starting at 15:30 pm, it will be possible to attend the 19th Meeting of Children and Youth Choirs in Lagos, organized by the Association of Grupo Coral de Lagos and with free entry, at Igreja das Freiras.

For the night, the musical show will be in charge of Rui Massena Trio, at the Duval Pestana Auditorium. The pianist and composer will take the stage at the Centro Cultural de Lagos.

October 27th, Municipal Day and municipal holiday in honor of S. Gonçalo de Lagos, begins with the usual flying of the Flags, at 9:30 am, accompanied by the hymns performed by the Banda Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1º de Maio and the traditional Largada de Pombos, at Gil Eanes Square.

This is followed by the Religious Festivities in honor of the Patron Saint São Gonçalo, with the Mass in the Field, followed by a Procession and Blessing of the sea and boats, by D. Manuel Neto Quintas, Bishop of the Algarve.

The ceremonies begin at 10:00 am, in Jardim da Constitution.

The solemn session marks the high point of the celebrations, starting at 15:30 pm, at the Cultural Center. The ceremony includes the attribution of seven municipal decorations (Municipal Merit Medals, silver and gold) to individuals and entities that have stood out in the Lacobrigense community, official interventions and moments of cultural entertainment.

The individual honored are Hélio Nunes Xavier, for his work in favor of the arts, especially in the area of ​​painting and writing, Luís Manuel Afonso, for his work and dedication in favor of the health and well-being of the community, Jorge Mealha Costa, for his work in favor of the arts, namely in the area of ​​sculpture and ceramics, and José Inácio Seromenho, for his recognition in the sports area, namely in the discipline of Shooting with Plates.

Tributes will also be given to two commercial establishments in the city – Restaurante Reis and Ourivesaria Coimbra – for their contribution to the development of the local economy, and also to the Congregation of the Holy Redeemer – Redemptorist Community of Lagos, for their dedication and altruism deposited in all the work developed in favor of the community.

The initial program foresaw, for the 25th of October, an oath of flag for the 8th Common General Formation Course of Army Squares, organized by the Infantry Regiment No. 1 of Beja. However, for reasons beyond the organization of the Municipality of Lagos, this event was cancelled.
