Chinese Ambassador visited UAlg to strengthen cooperation ties

For Paulo Águas, «in the future this relationship will be strengthened»

Cai Run, the Chinese ambassador to Portugal, visited, this Tuesday, 22 October, the University of Algarve (UAlg) to «strengthen the existing cooperation in the field of marine research and extend this collaboration to other areas, such as education and the transfer of technology'.

The ambassador thanked the «good reception» of Paulo Rector, UAlg's rector, and recalled his first visit to the Algarve academy, in 2016, including the Sea Science Center (CCMAR), being impressed with «the great progress of the University in recent years in the fields of Teaching and Research».

The ambassador congratulated the rector for the partnerships established with other countries, for the number of international students, for the "lots of life" he observed on the Campus and for the cooperation and relations with China that "are increasingly strengthened".

In addition to the strong collaboration already established with the Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU), in the area of marine research, the ambassador recalled that there is an enormous desire to expand and establish partnerships with other Chinese universities. The Chinese Academy of Sciences has 100 institutes, 10 of which are linked to the Sea.

With regard to the bilateral relationship, Cai Run considered that UAlg “can play a leading role in maritime cooperation between China and Portugal”.

The ambassador also stressed that "this University has contributed a lot to maritime cooperation between the two countries."

Cai Run mentioned the cooperation agreements signed by the Ministries responsible for Education and Science in the two countries, in order to encourage partnerships, such as joint research and demonstration projects, exchange of personnel and technology transfer activities with a view to the joint commercialization of R&D results.

Currently, there are students from 86 nationalities at UAlg, 20 of whom are from the People's Republic of China.

For Paulo Águas, the path has already begun, but “in the future this relationship will be strengthened because only through cooperation can more knowledge be created and shared to build a better world”.
