European Commission distinguishes Algarve as a Reference Center for Healthy Aging

The Algarve has been distinguished by the European Commission as a Reference Center for Active and Healthy Aging. The distinction is awarded this Wednesday, September 25, in Aarhus (Denmark).

The application of the Algarve region to Reference Site of the European Innovation Partnership on active and Healthy Aging , coordinated by Professor Dr. Sandra Pais and developed within the scope of the CENIE Project (Interreg POCTEP project co-financed by the European Social Fund), was led by the University of Algarve and CCDR-Algarve.

It had the support and partnership of several regional entities, representatives of Hélix Quadrupla, namely from the 16 Algarve municipalities, Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve (AMAL), Regional Health Administration (ARS), Social Security Institute-District Center of Faro, Regional Directorate for Culture, Regional Directorate for the Algarve of the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, Institute for Employment and Vocational Training-District Center of Faro, Algarve Tourism Region, University Hospital Center of the Algarve.

Other partners are the Santas Casas da Misericórdia of Albufeira, Boliqueime, Estômbar, Faro, Lagos, Loulé, Monchique, Portimão, Vila do Bispo and Vila Real de Santo António, as well as some Parish Centers (Santa Maria – Tavira, Cachopo, Martim Longo and Vaqueiros), Tavira Humanitarian Center of the Portuguese Red Cross, Irene Rolo Foundation , Saúde em Dialogue Platform, Algarve STP Association, Tavira Contact Association – Aect, Algarve Evolution, National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE), Algarve Region Business Association – NERA, Hotels and Tourism Enterprises Association (AHETA), Odiana Association , and the companies siosLIFE – For Younger Spirits, Dengun Lda, Keypoint, 40+Lab, Zoomarine, Agnus Dei – Dental Center of Algarve Ltd, Fisio S. The European Partnership for Innovation in Active and Healthy Aging (EIP – AHA) is an initiative launched by the European Commission, whose objective is to promote innovation and digital transformation in the field of active and healthy aging.

EIP aims to establish partnerships that help to strengthen research and innovation in the European Union (EU), bringing together all relevant EU, national and regional actors in different policy areas to tackle a specific challenge and involve all stakeholders. levels of the innovation chain.

The EIP on Active and Healthy Aging was the first EIP created in 2011, with the main objective of increasing the average healthy life expectancy of EU citizens by two years by the year 2020.

Thus, this partnership has as main focuses the improvement of health and quality of life for Europeans, with an emphasis on the elderly; supporting the long-term sustainability and efficiency of health and social care systems; and strengthening the competitiveness of EU industry through business and expansion into new markets.
