Who wants to discover Monte Molião and travel to Laccobriga?

Researchers are launching a new excavation campaign from the 15th of July

The archaeological excavations at Monte Molião, in Lagos, will be open for visits on the 22nd of August, between 9:00 am and 13:00 pm. It will be a way for all those interested in the past to travel back in time to Laccobriga, the origin of the current city of Lagos.

Since the 15th of July, researchers from the Archeology Center/UNIARQ of the University of Lisbon have been carrying out archaeological excavations at Monte Molião, located on the other bank of the Bensafrim stream, opposite the city of Lagos.

The works, which will last until the 28th of August, are fully financed by the Municipality of Lagos, under a protocol established between this Municipality and the Faculty of Arts of Lisbon.

The excavation campaign at Monte Molião is under the scientific direction of Ana Margarida Arruda, in co-direction with researchers Elisa de Sousa, Carlos Pereira, Francisco Gomes and Iris Dias.

It counts on the voluntary collaboration of undergraduate and master's students in Archeology at the Faculty of Arts of Lisbon and post-doctoral fellows, in a team comprising a total of 40 people.

The work done next to Rua do Molião has proven the excellent state of conservation of the domestic spaces from the imperial Roman period and the materials that remain in them.

Monte Molião is a small oval hill located on the right bank of the mouth of the Bensafrim stream. The investigation that the UNIARQ (Archaeological Center of the University of Lisbon) has been carrying out on the site allowed the collection of important data about its ancient occupations (from the Iron Age and Roman times).

The domestic architectures and the abundant archaeological materials recovered during the fieldwork demonstrate the integration of Monte Molião into the great trade routes of antiquity and the interaction of its inhabitants with other Mediterranean human communities.
