Exhibition at the Museum is a historical retrospective of the self-taught musician and accordionist

The exhibition “João César, A Magia do Accordeão”, a tribute by the Town Hall and the Parish Council of Portimão to the accordionist, born in Portimão, opens on August 17, at 18 pm, at the Museu da Cidade.

João César began playing solo at the age of 16 and also in various musical groups, performing in communities, ballrooms, popular parties and hotels, not only in Portimão, but also in the Algarve and all over the country.

This exhibition at the Museum is a historical retrospective of the self-taught musician, accordionist, considered an icon of music in the Algarve, with a large number of record editions.

With this initiative, «the intention is to honor the musician and the man who contributed so much to honor the name of Portimão and its citizens», emphasize the organizers. João César has always collaborated with all the musical expression groups in his land.

Furthermore, as a way of keeping alive the memory of this accordionist from Portimão, Portimão has held every year, since 2015, the “Festival de Accordeão João César”, organized by the Parish Council.

This year, the Festival is scheduled for the 24th of August, at 21 pm, at Praça da República (Alameda), and is part of the program “There is sport in the center of Portimão and much more”.

João César composed music for the popular marches in Lisbon, Portimão and other places and was an accompanying musician for Mariette Pessanha, Fernanda Baptista and Simone de Oliveira, among other artists.

He was born in Portimão, on April 14, 1934, and «early, in an intense and successful self-learning, he revealed his passion for the accordion, as his instrument of choice, possessing great versatility and musical complexity».

«Known as the “man of a thousand songs”, João César would be, in addition to being an excellent accordionist, a talented, inspired and productive composer, having always collaborated with all musical expression groups in his land».

The exhibition can be seen in August, during the Museum's special summer hours, on Tuesdays, from 19:30 pm to 23:00 pm, and from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm.
