De Mateos gives up on the Volta, João Rodrigues ex aequo with the yellow jersey

The Aviludo-Louletano cyclist suffered an indisposition

Vicente de Mateos, Aviludo-Louletano's cyclist, withdrew from the 81st Tour of Portugal this Saturday. The athlete from the Loulé club did not finish the 9th stage, in which the Algarve's João Rodrigues won a second over Jóni Brandão and equaled the yellow jersey in points.

The Spaniard from Louletano only covered 47 kilometers of the run between Fafe and the height of Senhora da Graça, in Mondim de Baixo. The withdrawal will have been caused by an indisposition and a bad night.

Today's stage of the Volta a Portugal was marked by a close fight starring João Rodrigues (W52-FC Porto) and Jóni Brandão (Efapel), who finished this tough stage in 2nd and 3rd place, behind the winner of the race, António Carvalho, also from W52-FC Porto.

The Algarve rider, in a final effort, managed to win the second that separated him from the yellow jersey, and enters the final stage of the Volta with the same points as Jóni Brandão.

Still with regard to the Algarve, Frederico Figueiredo, from Sporting/Tavira, remains in the spotlight and climbed to seventh position in the general rankings, after having finished the ninth stage in 5th position.
