Vacationers at the Beach of Faro will be invited to deliver plastic and metal packaging

TransforMAR Project is in its second edition

the beach of Faro will host the 2nd edition of the TransforMar initiative, between 29 and 31 July, from 10 am to 00 pm. This project aims to raise awareness among holidaymakers to hand over their plastic and metal packaging, preventing them from ending up at sea.

This is an initiative of Lidl Portugal, together with the Blue Flag Association of Europe (ABAE), Eletrão, Quercus, Associação Zero and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and aims to «raise awareness of the importance of good environmental behavior on the beach and for the principles of the circular economy – through the recovery, reuse, recycling and reduction of waste of plastic materials”.

The 2nd edition is present for 45 days on 15 beaches from North to South of the country, promoting the collection, in its own warehouse, not only of plastic packaging, but now also of metal, produced by vacationers while enjoying their time in beach, with the promise that these will be transformed into a benefit for the community – “an initiative that not only guarantees cleaner beaches, but also promotes more responsible behavior”, highlights Lidl.

In parallel, during the summer, physical activity equipment produced from plastic collected in the 1st edition of the TransforMAR project will be delivered to communities. The choice of this new destination attributed to plastic, as explained by the supermarket chain, "parts from the purpose of combining healthy lifestyles with responsible choices."

In its 1st edition, which took place last summer, TransforMAR visited 14 beaches, from North to South of the country, and a total of 1,5 tons of plastic material were collected, corresponding to around 88 thousand units. Electrão, project partner, the entire collection and recycling operation of plastic waste. Extruplás was the company responsible for transforming it into the physical activity circuit devices that will now be delivered.

Lidl stresses that “it was the first retail chain in Portugal to sign the environmental pact with the United Nations and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. At a national level, the chain was also the first to assume, in March 2018, a commitment to reduce the consumption of plastic in private label packaging by 20% by 2025; to discontinue the sale of disposable plastics in August 2018; and to announce the end of the sale of plastic bags for transporting purchases by the end of 2019».
