The Loulé Council has an ongoing campaign "Here we take care of Water", which aims to raise awareness of the need to save water and use this resource rationally, not only during the dry season, but throughout the year. .

The municipality “aspires for the “Here We Take Care of Water” campaign to be the result of a continuous process, built with the contribution and participation of everyone.

O campaign website provides videos and a set of practical, simple and intuitive suggestions and tips on how to take better care of water within its urban cycle (collection, treatment in ETA, storage, distribution, use, treatment in WWTP and release to the natural environment) .

Another of the initiative's future objectives is to disclose, on this website, the status, implementation phase and respective results obtained in projects and programs related to the efficient management of the urban water cycle, also intending to captivate users to share their own ideas and suggestions .

According to the Municipality of Loulé, "in addition to this campaign, other initiatives have been carried out throughout the municipality with the clear contribution of promoting good water management and saving", such as the placement of native flora species in public green spaces, well adapted to local conditions, the irrigation of some green spaces in the city of Loulé, and of all plots of the Social Gardens of Loulé, with the reuse of spring water from Bicas Velhas, or the free distribution, by its residents, of water reducers. flow to the faucets and their installation in different places and public spaces.

The municipality is also promoting the increase of green areas linked to an intelligent irrigation system that prevents irrigation on days when there is precipitation and that facilitates, for example, the detection of leaks, reduction of losses, scheduling of time and time of watering taking into account the time of year or the weather conditions of the day in question.

The Council has also reduced the operating period of the existing artificial fountains in the municipality, the washing of vehicles in the municipal fleet and is promoting irrigation based on the reuse of treated waste water in green spaces at Quinta do Lago.

The Municipality is currently developing its Municipal Contingency Plan for periods of drought, a «tool that aims to minimize the risks and damage caused by different types of drought, and ensure the preventive management of associated resources, in line with that defined in the Municipal Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change of Loulé».

According to municipal officials, “water is one of the natural resources most affected by climate change, it is urgent to manage it more efficiently and we all have an important contribution to make. This care must be taken, not only in periods of extreme drought but throughout the year».
