Students from Moncarapacho receive 1st prize in a national competition

The story of the orange that wanted to be a fish was awarded to Moncarapachian children

This Thursday, the 3rdD class of the Basic Education School of the 1st cycle of Moncarapacho received the first prize in the competition “Voltage Portugal in Fruit”, organized by the Compal Frutology Centre.

The children from Olhão received this award from representatives of the organizing entity, who came to Olhão.

The challenge launched by this competition, to which three groups from the municipality of Olhão joined, was to know the map of PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) of Portugal and «show everyone the importance of the fruit of each region'.

“Students and teachers did their best to create real works of art. In the case of the 3D class in Moncarapacho, students and teachers told a story about the orange that wanted to be fish, with the Algarve citrus fruit PGI as protagonists», according to the Câmara de Olhão.

This Thursday, Compal's Frutology Center also distinguished the other two classes from the municipality that participated: 2nd/3ºC of EB1 in Moncarapacho and 2ndD of EB1 in Fuzeta.

The Compal Frutology Center launched the initiative Volta a Portugal em Fruta «with the main objective of valuing PDO and PGI fruit of Portuguese origin and reinforcing the importance of consuming fruit in a balanced diet».

This initiative took the fruit map of Portugal and various recreational and educational multimedia materials to more than 60 primary schools in 23 municipalities in the regions demarcated with PDO and IGP fruit. Moncarapacho's class was one of the winners at the national level, with more than 2.000 votes.
