28 hotels, one restaurant and two local accommodations in the Algarve were awarded the green key award, an international symbol that promotes sustainable tourism and recognizes the good environmental practices of tourist establishments.
The Algarve was highlighted in the 2019 edition of these awards, the attribution of which is coordinated by the Blue Flag Association of Europe (ABAE), taking into account that there was a growth of 21 units compared to 2018.
At national level, there were 181 winners – 31 from the Algarve – who received their diplomas at a ceremony that took place at a hoteld e Alçvor, in Portimão.
Among the winning hotels in the Algarve there are some repeaters, who had already won a year ago, namely the Conrad Algarve (Quinta do Lago), the Hilton Vilamoura, the Pine Cliffs (Albufeira), the Vila Galé Albacora (Tavira), the Aqua Pedra dos Bicos (Albufeira), Vale D'El Rei (Lagoa), Velamar (Albufeira) and Casa Biota (Sagres).
«This year, the commitment to sustainable tourism is joined by another two dozen establishments throughout the region, including six new units of the Vila Galé group, as many hotels of the Pestana group, all six units of the AP Hotels & Resorts group, a fourth hotel of the Details Hotels & Resorts group and the only rural hotel with 5 stars in the Algarve, Vila Valverde (Lagos), in addition to the Mercearia Bio Café (Portimão)», announced the Algarve Tourism Region [see full list below].
João Fernandes, president of the Algarve Tourism Region, highlighted the «strong growth of the program in the destination, where more and more accommodation units are recognized and valued by tourists for good environmental practices, developing tourism in a sustainable way and meeting the needs of objectives of the Green Key program'.
The program is present in about 2900 tourist establishments in 57 countries around the world, «recognized with the Green Key award for the adoption of good environmental practices and for reducing the negative impacts of tourism and the costs of consuming natural resources».
