Beja is one of the six municipalities to integrate Altice's 100% fiber pilot project

State-of-the-art fiber optic coverage will reach 5,3 million homes by 2020, promises Altice

Beja, Cartaxo, Seia, Seixal, Sintra and Vieira do Minho are the first municipalities, in a total of more than ten parishes, to be part of the 100% fiber pilot project that Altice Portugal is promoting.

Altice Portugal thus starts a pilot project in parishes in six municipalities which, from the 30th of June, will be covered with 100% fiber optics.

The 100% fiber coverage plan in Portuguese parishes and municipalities, and the consequent increase in penetration of services supported on fibre, contributes, according to the company, «to increase digital inclusion, expand access to advanced services, promote sustained economic development and modernization, as well as accelerating the digital readiness of the entire society».

This type of operation is already taking place in other European countries, such as Spain, Holland, Belgium and Italy, for example.

This move, which Altice considers to be "essential for Portugal to continue at the forefront of Europe in terms of next generation networks", presents a set of advantages for customers, given that optical fiber is a more robust infrastructure, more simple and reliable in technological terms, offering a higher quality of service and with a huge potential for the wide offer of new services.

Alexandre Fonseca, executive president of Altice Portugal, considers that this movement is a natural evolution in technological terms, stating that «this is a project that starts in these parishes in the municipalities of Vieira do Minho, Cartaxo, Beja, Sintra, Seixal and Seia, but that we intend to cover the entire country in the coming years».

“This solid investment in state-of-the-art robust infrastructures allows us to develop and provide our customers with differentiating services in the market, based on maximum quality and reliability. For Altice, the commitments we assume are not just words, they are commitments that are reflected in actions and what we are presenting here today is proof of that. Altice Portugal privileges to be a partner of all territories in the interior of the country, which need the mobilization of many, so that they can overcome the adversity of desertification. We will not abandon these territories and, therefore, the investment we make is transversal, reaching the most remote regions, with the aim of making Portugal the first country in Europe with practically full coverage of optical fiber», he added.

Recognized as one of the largest investors in technological innovation in the country, this action is in line with Altice Portugal's strategy with regard to the expansion and strengthening of the resilience of new generation fixed and mobile infrastructures, with the provision of fiber optic coverage of latest generation of 5,3 million homes by 2020.

This investment covers the entire territory, reaching the most remote regions, with 27.000 places in 308 municipalities, with more than 3 million kilometers of fiber cable, thus making Portugal the first country in Europe with fiber optic coverage 100%.

This track record Altice Portugal positions the country's largest communications operator as the reference technology partner and the player which invests the most in innovation in Portugal, with different multidisciplinary projects.
