Guided tours, exhibitions and peddy-paper mark the Day of Monuments and Sites

There are free entrances to monuments

Guided tours, a peddy paper in Paderne Castle or the possibility of visiting the monuments of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve (Fortaleza de Sagres, Ermida de Guadalupe, Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar and Roman Ruins of Milreu). These are some of the initiatives of the International Day of Monuments and Sites that is marked this Thursday, 18 April.

This year, the theme is “Heritage and Rural Landscape”. As usual, the Algarve is once again celebrating the Day of Monuments and Sites with various proposals.

All monuments belonging to the Regional Directorate of Culture will have free entry. This is an opportunity to visit (or revisit) emblematic places, such as the Fortress of Sagres, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, in Raposeira (Vila do Bispo), the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, in Portimão, or the Roman Ruins of Milreu, in Estoi, in the interior of the municipality of Faro.

And, taking the algarvian capital, at 15:00 pm, the activity “Rural Landscape – Common Heritage” is scheduled at the Ermida de Santo António do Alto viewpoint.

This initiative will address "issues such as conflict over land use, activities and resources, the Mediterranean diet and the importance of heritage education in safeguarding landscapes"

Nossa Senhora do Alto Chapel

The activity will be guided by landscape architect José Brito and geographer Aquiles Marreiros, in this, which is the first time that the Algarve's Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) is associated with the initiative.

Participation is free with registration limited to 30 participants, and must be made to the email [email protected]

Moving to the Albufeira council, from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm, the Castle of Paderne is open to visits with activities such as a peddy paper. The idea is to make known, in a fun way, the history of that Castle, which is one of the seven represented on the Portuguese flag.

Also in Paderne there will be “Flavours around Moinho do Leitão”, from 10:30 am to 13:00 pm and from 15:00 pm to 16:30 pm.

In addition to being able to visit the mill and observe, up close, how the milling of cereals worked, users of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Albufeira will share experiences and knowledge, in the context of handicrafts, sweets and regional bakeries and traditional games.

In the morning, from 10:00 am to 13:00 pm, it will be possible to visit the Chapel of Misericórdia in Albufeira. Next to the church, and during the same time, there will be an exhibition of artisan work.

Silves, in turn, begins the International Day of Monuments and Sites with the inauguration of an exhibition called “Polychrome of tradition”.

The Municipal Market will be the space where, at 10:00 am, this exhibition will open, based on architecture, popular art, crafts, people and experiences that are the preferred targets of the objective of Filipe da Palma, author of the exhibition. The photographer will also have an exhibition in Olhão

The exhibition at the Mercado de Silves can be seen until the 31st of May, from 7:00 am to 17:00 pm (except Sundays), and is free.

The day will end at 18:00 with a lecture, at the Municipal Museum of Archeology, by the paleontologist Hugo Campos, entitled “Before Man: The animals that lived in the center of the Algarve”.

In this lecture, Hugo Campos will talk about the earth about 227 million years ago, specifically from this geological time in the territory that currently corresponds to the Central Algarve.

The initiative «aims to make known a little about life on earth in the Geological Age that corresponds to the Triassic, when rocks such as “Grés de Silves” were formed and when the region was inhabited by extinct animals such as the recently identified and classified Metaposaurus Algarviensis», explains the Chamber of Silves.

The activity is free entry.

A guided tour of the Igreja Matriz in São Marcos da Serra is the proposal for this Saturday, April 20, from 10:30 am.

In this initiative, architectural and historical aspects relating to the Igreja Matriz in São Marcos da Serra will be disclosed. The Igreja Matriz was probably built in the first half of the 1755th century, but, like most churches in the Algarve, it underwent several renovations during the second half of the 282th century (following the 440 earthquake). Participation is free but subject to prior appointment (854 XNUMX XNUMX).

Silves' program ends on April 20th, with a Chocolate Workshop “Do you know how to make chocolate eggs?”, hosted by Dora Barradas, which will take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, at the Seniors Pole of São Marcos da Serra.

In a symbiosis between the celebration of the Easter season and the manufacture of chocolate, the participant will be invited to “get their hands on the chocolate” allowing them to acquire knowledge and be able to autonomously produce their chocolate eggs. Once again, prior booking is required to participate in this event (282 440 854).

Passing to Lagos, there will be free entrances to the city's cultural facilities (Santo António Church, Slave Market and Fort Ponta da Bandeirinha). But be careful, you have to enter either between 10:00 and 12:30 or 14:00 and 17:30.

São Brás de Alportel, in turn, marks the International Day of Monuments and Sites with a tour of the “Sintra do Barrocal”, ie…Corotelo. It will be on the 28th of April, from 9:30 am, and will be an interpretation tour of the house in the landscape, the uses and ways of living in the rural world and some of its identity elements

Registration is free, but mandatory by calling 289840019 or by e-mail [email protected].

Already in Tavira, this thursday, April 18, at 10 am, there will be a visit to the fruit tree collection at the Tavira Agrarian Experimentation Center (formerly Posto Agrário), under the guidance of António Marreiros and João Costa, from the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Algarve. As for Loulé, will celebrate the International Day of Local Monuments with an activity on the 27th of April. Participants of the Walking Festival Ameixial will be able to participate in the work of placing the handmade mats on the conical roof of a haystack in the place of Corte d'Ouro, in Ameixial.

In the region, there will also be the possibility of carrying out, from 14:00 to 17:00, guided tours to three headlights: Alfanzina (Lagoa), Cabo de São Vicente (Sagres) and Vila Real de Santo António.

Finally, in Baixo Alentejo, more specifically in Beja, the initiative will be celebrated at Moinho Grande, located on the outskirts of the city.

Owned by the Soares family, who have guaranteed its protection for several generations, the Moinho has «allowed the landscape (re)enhancement of the city's surroundings».

«Moinho Grande, in addition to its undeniable beauty, is a symbol of unique heritage, where the wind gave way to flour and from there to the most transversal of human foods, bread», says the Chamber of Beja.

It is a place of a thousand and one stories and knowledge that, from 17:30 pm to 19:30 pm, will be explored through guided tours by Francisco Soares and a short story session promoted by the Municipal Library of Beja.
