Vila do Bispo will have a Monument in Homage to Combatants

Initiative serves to mark Combatant Day

Vila do Bispo inaugurates this Tuesday, April 9th, at 11:00 am, a Monument in Homage to Combatants, in Jardim da Fonte.

The ceremony will be presided over by the Mayor Adelino Soares.

With this monument, the municipality intends to honor all the military in the municipality who died in World War I (in 1918), in the War of the Overseas (in 1962, 1966, 1968 and 1969) and, equally, the 10 aviators of the Royal Air Force (nine British and an Australian), who died on March 22, 1943, after the explosion of the Catalina seaplane, over Tonel Bay, in Sagres, in the midst of World War II.

Of the 10 crew, only the bodies of Gilbert Orton and George Gibson were found.

This evocative monument is also a tribute and a form of recognition by the council to all the local Combatants who rendered their service to Portugal during the Overseas War (1961-1974).

The ceremony will end with the celebration of a suffrage mass at the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in Vila do Bispo, at 12:00 pm.

The initiative, organized by the Municipality of Vila do Bispo, has the support of the Association of Ex-Combatants of the Municipality of Vila do Bispo and the League of Combatants.
