Via Sacra, processions and concert celebrate Holy Week in Tavira

Celebrations end with concert

A Via Sacra, around the Church of Santa Maria, processions and an Easter concert commemorate, from April 14th to 21st, Holy Week in Tavira.

On the 14th, Palm Sunday, at 17 pm, the Triunfo Procession will take place from the Igreja do Carmo.

“This procession is made up of several gilt carved floors, which describe the life of Christ, from Monte das Oliveiras to his death,” says Câmara de Tavira.

There are records that show that this religious event was already organized, in the year 1789, by the Carmelite Order of the city of Tavira.

Also in this area, the Ramos Eucharist is held in the Churches of Santa Luzia (13th at 16:00 pm), Santiago (13th at 17:00 pm), São Paulo (14th at 9:00 am) and Santa Maria (14th at 11:00 am) and 12:15 pm- English).

The Via Sacra takes place, on the 17th, from 21 pm, on a route consisting of fourteen stations, around the Church of Santa Maria.

On the 18th, it is possible to attend, in the churches of Santa Luzia (17:00) and Santa Maria (19:00), the celebration of the Lord's Supper. On the same day, at 21 pm, the Eucharistic Adoration takes place in the Church of Santiago.

The Procession of the Burial of the Lord, organized by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Tavira, takes place on the 19th, Good Friday, at 21 pm, from the Igreja da Misericórdia.

This religious act was established in Portugal in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, becoming part of the traditional Holy Week celebrations.

On the 19th and 20th, at 10:00 am, the Prayer of Lauds takes place in the Church of Santiago. Also, on the 19th, at 15 pm, the Passion of the Lord is celebrated in the Church of Santa Maria.

For the 20th, at 21 pm, the Easter Vigil is scheduled at the Church of Santa Maria.

On the 21st, Easter Sunday, it is possible to attend the Eucharist in the churches of São Paulo (9:00), Santa Maria (11:00 and 12:15 – English) and Santa Luzia (18:00).

Also on this day, at 10:00 am, departing from the Church of São Paulo, the Procession of the Resurrection to the Church of Santa Maria takes place.

The celebrations close at 18 pm at the Igreja do Carmo, with the concert “Great Periods in the History of Music – The Baroque”, by the Orquestra Clássica do Sul & Grupo Vocal Olisipo. This initiative is part of the Algarve International Music Festival.
