Portimão states that it is "prepared to respond to emergency situations in times of energy crisis"

There are no records "for the time being, any difficulties or obstacles to the normal functioning of essential services in the municipality, including social support"

The Municipal Civil Protection Commission of Portimão met extraordinarily this Wednesday, April 17, in the early afternoon, at the Municipal Center for Civil Protection and Relief Operations, to assess the situation in the county, as well as implement measures of anticipation in the face of foreseeable scenarios in terms of civil protection and rescue, due to the strike of drivers of hazardous materials.

The meeting arose in the wake of Tuesday's Dispatch, by the ministers of the Internal Administration and Environment and Energy Transition, who declared the Alert Situation, under the Civil Protection Basic Law, for the period between 16 and 21 of April, for the entire territory of mainland Portugal, in view of the energy crisis decreed for the fuel sector.

In this extraordinary meeting, which included the participation of different Civil Protection Agents and Cooperating Entities (EC), an analysis was carried out based on a survey carried out by the Municipal Civil Protection Service of the current situation in the municipality's territory.

The risks and the capacity to respond to the shortage of fuel in the municipality were also assessed, with a view to implementing a set of mitigating measures to ensure the maintenance of normality of essential services in the area of security, emergency, civil protection, health and social support .

To this end, the Commission issued a decision that includes anticipation measures already implemented since yesterday, the 16th, by the Municipal Civil Protection Service, namely the expansion of the municipal strategic fuel reserve for Civil Protection in the network of refueling stations and in the own premises of the Portimão Council and, as of today, in the premises of EMARP – Municipal Water and Waste Company of Portimão.

According to a note from the municipality, this reserve corresponds to the consumption calculated for each response force, in a careful management and rationalization of the use of available fuel, so as not to compromise the safety of residents, as well as assistance to the population in emergency situations or social support".

In view of the diagnosis carried out and the full mobilization of means and resources contained in the municipal emergency planning, as well as the absence of registration, by the security forces and services, of any incidents in the municipality, the Commission considered that it was not necessary, at the time, to activate the Municipal Civil Protection Emergency Plan of Portimão.

It decided, however, to reinforce monitoring, in order to guard against a possible change in the situation, "since all the response, assistance and logistical support mechanisms of the operations are mobilized or with a high level of readiness".

In this regard, the Operations and Communications Room of the Municipal Center for Civil Protection and Relief Operations of Portimão will continue to monitor the situation regarding the supply in the municipality on a permanent basis, with regular status points.

The Municipality of Portimão, through its Municipal Civil Protection Service, calls on all citizens to carry out «an efficient rationalization and management of fuels in the coming days», adding that «for now, there are no difficulties or obstacles to normal functioning of essential services in the municipality, including social support'.
