Musical work inspired by a poem by João Lúcio with world premiere in Faro

“O Meu Algarve” was commissioned by FIMA to composer Luís Soldado

The work “O Meu Algarve”, written by the composer Luís Soldado inspired by the homonymous poem by João Lúcio, will be presented in world premiere on Friday, the 12th, in the auditorium of the Conservatório Regional do Algarve Maria Campina, in Faro, in a concert that will bring together soprano Dora Rodrigues and the Orquestra Clássica do Sul (OCS).

This show will be preceded by a photography exhibition and a lecture on the poet from Olhão, João Lúcio, whose poem “O Meu Algarve”, written in 1905, is the starting point «for a night dedicated to the Algarve region», according to OCS , which organizes the Algarve International Music Festival (FIMA), within which the initiative takes place.

Invited by the Orquestra Clássica do Sul, Portuguese composer Luís Soldado created a cycle of five songs that «in a certain way personify the simplicity and ingenuity of my Algarve, but also that of João Lúcio. Far from my current aesthetic, I couldn't resist revisiting some of the first melodies I composed, still as a teenager, and, from them, compose most of these five songs that are a mixture of joy and longing», according to the composer.

This work, for voice and orchestra, will be performed by the renowned soprano Dora Rodrigues, who will be accompanied by the Orquestra Clássica do Sul under the direction of conductor Rui Pinheiro.

The rest of the program will be completed with Portuguese-inspired works, with emphasis on “Divertimento nº1” by Joly Braga Santos, “one of the greatest modern Portuguese composers and whose music is imbued with a strong nationalist character – a kind of “imaginary folklore”» .

From 20:00 onwards, a collection of old photographs from the Algarve will be on display at the Conservatory gallery and, at 20:15, a lecture will begin with writer Vasco Prudêncio, author of the book “O Creator de Fantasmas”, an unprecedented study on João Pike.

Tickets for the concert “O Meu Algarve – music of national inspiration”, starting at 21 pm, cost 00 euros and can be purchased online or at the event venue on the day of the show starting at 20:00. Visiting the exhibition and participating in the lecture are free.

FIMA is one of the events that integrate the “365Algarve” program.
