The Navy's hydrographic ship is on a mission to the south of the Algarve

Ship is on mission until May 4th

The NRP D. Carlos I, of the Portuguese Navy, is on a mission to the south of the Algarve, until 4 May, to collect data and water samples, within the scope of the AQUIMAR Project – Marine Knowledge Supporting Aquaculture.

According to the Navy, “the ship's objective is to carry out CTD (Conductivity, Temperature and Pressure) profiles along the water column, collecting water samples and measuring the currents. These data will be later analyzed considering the biological, physicochemical and microplastic parameters. From the 17th of April to the 4th of May, the ship is expected to carry out around 400 stations between the bathymetry of 30 and 200 meters deep».

This mission is the second of the project, in continuation of the mission carried out in 2018 by the ships NRP Almirante Gago Coutinho and NRP Auriga.

«For this mission, on board the NRP D. Carlos I, in addition to the garrison of 38 soldiers, 15 members of the technical teams of the Hydrographic Institute, from the areas of Oceanography and Chemistry», adds the Navy.

The AQUIMAR project aims to characterize the oceanographic, physical-chemical, geochemical and biological conditions to optimize the selection of locations for the implementation of aquaculture units in the Maritime Spatial Planning Plan.
