Crime decreased in the Algarve in 2018 [infographics]

Crime declined in the Algarve in 2018. According to the Annual Internal Security Report, last year, both general crime and violent and serious crime registered declines in the region.

The document reveals that there were 21680 reports of crimes, 227 fewer than in the previous year.

In terms of general crime, compared to 2017, the biggest decreases were observed in thefts by pickpockets (-20%) and also in driving a vehicle with an alcohol rate above 1,2 g/l (-16,3%) which, even so, was the most frequent crime.

With regard to increases, there was an increase in the participation of computer and communications fraud (+15,1%) and also in counterfeiting, currency counterfeiting and counterfeiting (+16,6%).

 

With regard to violent and serious crime, there was a decrease of 7,4% last year in the Algarve, which corresponds to 73 crimes of this type less.

Robbery on public roads, except for towing, was the most common offense. Still, there was a decrease of 8,2% compared to the previous year in this type of crime. In the opposite direction, there were 14 gas pump robberies in 2018, representing an increase of 55,6% compared to 2017.

 

By municipality, Loulé was the one that had the most reports of crimes, with a total of 3661, followed by Albufeira with 3139 and Faro with 3038. The safest municipality, judging by the number of crimes reported, is Alcoutim, with only 105.

 

The results in the Algarve followed the national trend, since, in the country, violent and serious crime dropped, in 2018, by 8,6%, while general crime dropped by 2,6%.
