300 students, from all over the country, participate in the National Meeting of Biology Students (ENEB), which starts tomorrow and continues until Wednesday, the 17th, in Faro. Lectures, workshops, but also beach tournaments and a cocktail get-together with researchers are some of the main initiatives.

Inês Diogo, president of the Organizing Committee of the XXII National Meeting of Biology Students, explained to Sul Informação that, this year, there are three big news.

«We're going to have football and volleyball tournaments, and get-togethers at Praia de Faro, as well as a cocktail get-together, in the Cloisters of the Museum of Faro, with the presence of investigators, on Saturday, the 13th, at 20:30. It is also new, this year, to hold a session of problem solving».

And what will this be? «We are going to bring together researchers from the Center for Marine Sciences of the University of Algarve to present environmental problems. Participants will have to think about the solutions and, in the end, there will be a small debate with the conclusions we reach», said Inês Diogo. It will be on Tuesday, the 16th, from 15:00 to 18:30.

One of the transversal components to all ENEB are the lectures and workshops.

In this sense, the presence, on Sunday, the 14th, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, of João Correia is already guaranteed, a communicator with three TEDx in his curriculum and who has already given more than a hundred lectures on shark biology and conservation.

At the Algarve Regional Conservatory, in Faro, where all the lectures will take place, João Correia will talk about an unusual life story, spent among sharks in the Bahamas, night injections in sharks at the Zoo, animal-certified cargo planes for the Lisbon Oceanarium, classes and research in biology navy, business management, a strong Star Wars influence and other unexpected surprises.

Fábia Azevedo, coordinator of the RIAS – Center for the Recovery and Research of Wild Animals, will speak, on Tuesday, the 16th, starting at 14 pm, on the “Potentials of a Center for the Recovery of Wild Fauna”.

As for the workshops, they will take place at the University of Algarve's Gambelas Campus. «It is there that the students of Biology and Marine Biology have classes and, therefore, we also want to make known our Campus», framed Inês Diogo to Sul Informação.

The workshops take place on Monday, the 15th, from 9:00 am to 14:00 pm and from 14:30 pm to 18:30 pm, and involve topics ranging from observation and first aid in birds (by Thijs Valkenburg and Fábia Azevedo), how to assess the health of a fish ( by Rui Cabral e Silva) or the removal of chorão-das-praias, the latter to be administered by the Portuguese Environment Agency.

In addition to these lectures and workshops, ENEB also has a side of recreational activities, taking place on the same day and at the same time as the workshops, with each student being able to choose, upon registration, in which initiatives to participate.

A trip to Zoomarine, surfing, Stand up paddle, whale watching or a diving baptism are some of the proposals for recreational activities.

At ENEB there is also the part of socializing between students “which should not be neglected”, as Inês Diogo explained to our newspaper. After all, the event brings together 300 participants from all over the country who can exchange experiences over six days.

For this reason, the last night (Tuesday, 16th) takes place at the bar “O Castelo” in Faro, a farewell camp.

«We hope that this is the best ENEB ever and we are working towards it», concluded the president of the Organizing Committee of the XXII National Meeting of Biology Students.
