Simmering theater in the mountains where not all the fire took

Unlike what happened in November, "we are going to drink the arbutus, which, from one moment to the next, may disappear"

«The fire did not reach Marmelete, who only saw it from afar last summer. Around here, we still have strawberry trees and strawberry trees, but fire is always a potential inhabitant and character of this territory. This is what we are going to talk about».

This is how the director and artistic director Giacomo Scalisi talks about the show «Medronho #2. Serra, second chapter", another production of the project till the sea, which opens on March 14th and will have eight representations, from Thursday to Sunday, until March 24th, in Marmelete, with a meeting point at Casa do Medronho, always at 20 pm.

“After, in November, we spoke about fire, at a particularly strong moment, in the Alferce area, through the mouths of two men”, now it is the turn of two women to give voice to Afonso Cruz's text.

There will be two actresses “who intoxicate the public, with their speech, sometimes sensitive, sometimes wild, along a journey through unexplored corners” of Marmelete, in this new theater show in the distilleries of Medronho.

«At this moment, when the still fire is lit, there is also the fear that the arbutus will be devoured by the flames into the heart of the drink. Because it matters not to forget, because it matters to remember. To all of this, we give a toast», explains Giacomo Scalisi.

The artistic director, in an interview with Sul Informação, lifts the veil a little about what this new show will be, explaining that «Afonso Cruz makes a portrait of two women who talk about a man, Carlos, the Bear». Basically, «it's a woman divided into two characters and there are two actresses who play the same character and who, in flashbacks, tell the life of Carlos, always on the edge of knowing/not knowing, of a possible ambiguity. They talk about Carlos' life, how he was called Urso and how he became a reference figure in the community».

The public, as is already used to these theater shows in the distilleries of Medronho, will be itinerant and divided into groups and will go «looking for these stories, not only in the distilleries, but also in other places in Marmelete, which are part of the community». What places? Giacomo does not reveal.

And it is a community that «every day breathes mountains, arbutus and that fear». “We return to the subject of fire, but from another point of view”. This time, unlike what happened in November, "we will drink the arbutus, which, from one moment to the next, may disappear", he stressed. Once again, in the background will be the question of “how things end and start over”.

As for the actresses, they are Marta Gorgulho, who repeats her presence from last year, and Neusa Dias, an Algarvian actress based in Lagos, who was born in Maria Vinagre, in the municipality of Aljezur, where her family originates. “It has to do with this territory and that was one of the reasons I invited her,” explains Giacomo. Because, recalls the director, the Lavrar o Mar project “is always looking for the territory, its declared objective is to seek these artistic relationships with those who live and work here”.

The cultural program till the sea Thus, he returns to revisit this mountain culture so unique in its environments, plots and mysteries, with this second chapter of Medronho #2: Serra.

New texts by Afonso Cruz extend last year's narrative and are involved with flakes of ash from the great fire of Monchique, while amplifying the female universe, in the voices of a woman who unfolds in time to retrieve a man's story: “ the one they would call the Bear”.

If you want to be one of the lucky spectators who will discover and experience it all, hurry up. In all, there will be eight shows, each with 50 people, but at least five of them are already sold out. “There are 200 people, in two weeks, that we invite to share this moment with us”, concludes Giacomo Scalisi.

The cultural program Lavrar o Mar, promoted by the Cosa Nostra cooperative, is part of the program 365 Algarve, also with the financial support of the General Directorate of Arts, CRESC Algarve 2020 and the Municipalities of Monchique and Aljezur.
