Tavira shows “Os Mundos do Sul” by Artur Pastor

The exhibition “Artur Pastor and the Southern Worlds” opens next Saturday, March 30, at 18 pm, at Palácio da Galeria, in Tavira. 

This exhibition results from the collaboration between the local authorities of Lisbon and Tavira, from the cooperation of the Municipal Archive of Lisbon with the Municipal Museum of Tavira.

Artur Pastor was one of the great Portuguese photographers of the 23th century. He began his photography activity in Tavira, at the age of XNUMX, when he was serving in the military, capturing images of tuna fishing boats.

In addition to the quality and recognition of the national importance of his work, the reason for this exhibition in Tavira is reinforced and justified by this initial path.

Artur Pastor (1922-1999) was born in Alter do Chão, was a photographer for the Ministry of Agriculture and creator of the Photographic Archive of this institution, for which he worked all his life.

He produced a body of images about agriculture in Portugal in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. He also photographed activities related to fishing on the Algarve coast, Nazaré, Sesimbra and Apulia between 1942 and 1970.

He published the books “Nazaré” in 1958 and “Algarve” in 1965, both with his images and texts. He held several exhibitions and collaborated with numerous national and foreign magazines and publications.

This exhibition comprises several themed rooms, with photographs by Artur Pastor on agriculture, fisheries, architecture, craft activities, agricultural research activities and also a retrospective of his first exhibition, in 1946, “Motivos do Sul”.

His first works produced, from 1942 to 1974, are exhibited, with his Rolleiflex in black and white 6×6 negative.

In this context, original evidence produced by Artur Pastor for his exhibitions and current evidence produced by the Lisbon Municipal Archive are presented. A documentary “Landscape of Artur Pastor”, directed by Fernando Carrilho and produced by Videoteca Municipal de Lisboa in 2014 will be presented.

Artur Pastor's estate was acquired from the photographer's family by the Lisbon Municipal Archive after his death. It was the object of a large exhibition in Lisbon, organized by the Municipal Archive, which was exhibited at the Photographic Archive and at the City Museum in 2014. Since its acquisition and first release, Artur Pastor's photography collection has been arousing growing interest in the world. public, being progressively more requested, both for illustration and for regional exhibitions in Nazaré, Sesimbra, Alter do Chão, Lagoa and Évora.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog and guided tours. This show will run until November 9th.
