Lagos bets on Ocean literacy and bullying prevention in schools

Chamber will support two intervention initiatives in the school environment

The Municipality of Lagos will join the Blue School program of the Ministry of the Sea/General Directorate for the Policy of the Sea and support the project “Na Primeira Pessoa”, of the youth association Sê Mais Sê Melhor.

The municipality's adhesion to these two intervention initiatives in the school environment, which will work, respectively, on Ocean literacy and the behavioral area, was approved at the Chamber meeting on 6 March.

The Escola Azul program «intends to place ocean literacy in the national educational agenda, encouraging and guiding Portuguese schools to promote structured and transversal projects, in partnership with different actors in the maritime sector (economy, tourism, sport, science, technology, among others)”, according to the Municipality of Lagos.

Other objectives of this initiative, whose introduction in schools in lacobrigenses has the support of the local Ciência Viva Center, is to «create ties between the school and the local community around the theme of the ocean, foster communication between different institutions with an active role in education marine and enhance professions in emerging areas linked to the economy of the sea”.

The association's project for the promotion of human potential Sê Mais Sê Melhor, in turn, aims to «intervene in the school context to raise awareness among young people and educational agents about topics diagnosed as relevant, contributing to the prevention of phenomena such as bullying and behaviors of risks related to peer violence, sexuality and substance use, among others'.

«For this purpose, methodologies of non-formal education will be used, with intervention in the most varied areas of behavior, interpersonal relationship, self-image and value system, around four main thematic axes: “Eu Consigo” (prevention and intervention in deviant behaviors); “Eu Respect” (promotion of social values and competences); “I Am” (promotion of well-being and self-knowledge); and “Eu Sei” (motivation for studying)», according to the Lacobrigense autarchy.

This project is part of the program that the Youth Association Sê Mais Sê Melhor intends to apply to the PAJ – Youth Support Program of the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth.
