Child Mental Health Support Groups promote meeting in São Brás

Meeting marks 18 years of existence of these pioneering groups

The Support Groups for Child Mental Health (GASMI) of the Regional Health Administration (ARS) of the Algarve are promoting a Regional Meeting, on the 29th of March, at the São Brás de Alportel Cineteatro, to celebrate 18 years of existence and debate the future of this pioneering project at national level.

Under the motto “A Model of Intervention in Mental Health”, the meeting, aimed at professionals in health, education, the social sector, students and the community in general, aims to “promote dialogue between teams and community partners , evaluate the work developed under this pioneering project over these 18 years in the region and, together, reflect on the current challenges that arise in this area and debate the future of the project», explains ARS Algarve.

According to the entity, «throughout the day, the timeline from the past to the future of GASMI will be covered with the participation of professionals from the teams, specialists in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and representatives of community partners (schools , municipalities, Commissions for the Protection of Children and Youth at Risk, Multidisciplinary Technical Support Teams for the Courts – EMAT, Social Security)».

Created in November 2001, under a collaboration protocol between ARS Algarve and the Department of Psychiatry for Children and Adolescents of the Pediatric Hospital of Dona Estefânia, the Support Groups for Child Mental Health (GASMI) are made up of psychologists, doctors family, nurses, social workers, and therapists from the three Health Center Groupings in the Algarve, under the advice of a child and adolescent psychiatry consultant from that Department.

These groups «develop programs for the prevention and promotion of parenting skills, aimed at families at risk with children aged 3 to 12 years old, who manifest clinically significant behavioral, emotional and/or social changes that compromise their mental health», explains the ARS Algarve .

The action of GASMI "is developed in a systemic perspective and proximity to children, families and the community, with the aim of preventing and treating mental health disorders, as well as minimizing their impact", he adds.

Currently, there are 10 GASMI teams in the region: 4 in ACeS Barlavento (Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa and Silves); 4 at ACeS Central (Albufeira, Loulé, Faro and Olhão) and 2 in ACeS Sotavento (Tavira and VRSA).

«The relevance of the work developed by GASMI over these 18 years has already been recognized by the scientific community and the current National Plan for Mental Health points to this model as an example of good practices to be replicated at national level, as it is part of the integration perspective. of health care”, stresses the ARS Algarve.

Registration for this meeting is free and open until the 26th of March here.
