CHE Lagoense wins National Badminton Championship

Algarvian club will represent Portugal in the European Champion Clubs' Cup

Last weekend, March 2nd and 3rd, CHE Lagoense won the National Championship for Senior Mixed Teams in Badminton, held at the Centro de Alto Performance (CAR) in Caldas da Rainha.

By climbing to the highest place on this podium, the team from Lagoa won the right to represent Portugal in the European Champion Clubs' Cup, which is played in Luxembourg from 2 to 6 July.

This was the eighth time that CHE Lagoense won the most important national title in Portuguese badminton.

The journey to the title, on Saturday, began with 5-0 victories, in meetings with Nova Semente Grupo Desportivo and Clube Albergaria, which allowed the victory in the group. In the semi-final, on Sunday morning, the team from Lagoa beat Clube DR by 3-1 and won a place in the final. Once there, CHE Lagoense beat Associação Académica de Coimbra 3-1.

With this achievement, ACD CHE Lagoense reinforces its status as «the greatest national badminton power, a fact that makes Lagoa and sport in the municipality very proud and dignified», according to Luís Encarnação, councilor with the responsibility for Sports in Lagoa.

The Municipality of Lagoa «has already addressed the club and the athletes with warm congratulations not only for the results achieved, but also for the entire journey and contribution to the elevation of sport at local, regional, national and international levels».

Mariana Chang, Mariana Leite, Catarina Cristina, Ana Reis, Joana Lopes, Daniela Conceição, Alexandre Paixão, Bruno Carvalho, Ângelo Silva, Bernardo Atilano, Tomás Nero and Miguel Rocha were the players who became national champions.

Luís Encarnação also emphasizes that “ACD CHE Lagoense has already contributed to 3 Olympic participations by Portugal in the badminton modality”, referring to Pedro Martins, in London 2012, and in Rio de Janeiro, in 2016, as well as Telma Santos in London 2012.

The club also achieved «its national title number 286, standing 14 out of the 300 national titles, a feat that it could achieve this year», stresses the mayor.

Badminton is a modality considered by the Municipality as strategic in the Lagoa Sport Development Program, registering 92 federated athletes at the beginning of this sporting season, 25 female and 67 male.
