Southeast brings waves to the south coast, wind and increased risk of fire

IPMA placed the district of Faro under «Yellow Warning»

The Southeast, scheduled for today and tomorrow, the 13th and 14th of February, will bring sea agitation to the southern Algarve coast, a wind that can be strong and gusty and, therefore, increase the risk of fire in the Algarve.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) even placed the district of Faro under "Yellow Warning", due to the forecast of "southeast waves with 1,5 to 2 meters, increasing to 2 to 2,5 meters from 00UTC on the 14th", ie from midnight today.

For its part, the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Portimão warns of very low Relative Air Humidity values, in the order of 50%, maximum temperature of 19ºC, intensification of the southeast wind, sometimes blowing Strong (up to 40km/h) with the possibility of gusts up to 70km/h.

These conditions, stresses the Civil Protection of Portimão, create a Moderate fire risk index for this Thursday, the 14th.

It is, therefore, a «hot and dry weather with favorable conditions for the progression of possible rural fires».

Thus, the Civil Protection of Portimão recalls some precautions to be taken, given the forecast weather conditions, in carrying out agricultural and forestry work, namely: «keep machines and equipment clean of oil and dust; supply the machines cold and in a place with little vegetation; be careful with sparks when handling them, avoiding their use in hot periods».

The SMPC also recommends the adequacy of behavior and attitudes towards the situation of rural fire danger, namely with the adoption of the necessary prevention and precautionary measures, paying special attention to the evolution of the fire danger for the coming days, available at the sites of the ANPC and IPMA internet, or through the “Proteção 24” Line.

He also recalls that prior communication is mandatory whenever he intends to burn leftovers, through the “Proteção 24” Line (808 282 112).
