It starts "within days" and is seen as aa “very important” work that will allow everyone to “enjoy life and nature in an open space”. The second phase of Passeio das Dunas, between the Crown Plaza Hotel, in Quarteira, and Vilamoura Marina, will follow the philosophy of what was already done in the first, with spaces for physical exercise, benches and green spaces.
The act of consignment of the work, a contract costing 2,6 million euros, was signed this Monday, February 18, between the Municipality of Loulé and the contractor, in a ceremony that took place at the Municipal Center of Quarteira.
According to Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, "the intervention philosophy of the second phase will be the same: return of public space, qualified, with environmental values, the fruition of nature, without building masses."
To this end, benches, leisure areas and spaces for physical exercise will be built. These are, by the way, components of the current Passeio das Dunas, opened in 2015, and that came to put an end to one of the areas with the worst reputation in the Algarve, the Pescadores district, which became the “drug supermarket of the Algarve”.
After the completion of this second phase of the work, it will be «possible to talk or take a walk with the family near the sea», illustrated Vítor Aleixo.
This will be, then, a "requalification that will be decompression" and is "synonymous with renaturalization, although a section already enters an urbanized part", he explained.
The work will cause some constraints, namely for the beach support concessionaires. The fact is that close to where the second phase of the Passeio das Dunas will start, there is, for example, the very popular beach of Marina de Vilamoura.
"We have to take care of their interests to hurt them as little as possible and, therefore, the works will be interrupted in July and August", guaranteed Vítor Aleixo. The idea is not to affect the business in the two months with the greatest influx of tourists.
With this second phase of Passeio das Dunas, which has an execution period of 420 days, «most part of the intervention, not all, foreseen for this coastal strip that connects Quarteira to Vilamoura is concluded», explained the mayor.
This future third phase completes two works: the Municipal Market of Quarteira, near the Rosa Branca restaurant, and the entire arrangement of Largo das Cortes Reais, which is in front of the auction.
In the case of Mercado, “the project is completed and we are awaiting the Environmental Impact Assessment before moving on to construction. As far as Largo is concerned, it is a project that is still underway because this will be the last phase», concluded Vítor Aleixo.
