Loulé raises awareness of rural fire prevention

The legislation requires that the fuel management works must take place until the 15th of March

The Municipal Civil Protection Service of Loulé is carrying out a series of awareness-raising actions aimed at preventing rural fires in the municipality's priority parishes.

According to the Municipality of Loulé, «the purpose of this plan is, fundamentally, to inform the population about the obligation to clean a 50 meter fuel management strip around the houses and 100 meters in the population clusters, as well as self-protection procedures in case of occurrences».

These actions began on the 7th of February, in the monthly market of Ameixial, and will be extended to other markets in the Municipality, still this month.

Thus, the same initiative will take place on the 21st, in the Alte market, on the 23rd, in the Azinhal market, on the 24th, in the Querença market, and on the 2nd and 3rd of March, in the Benafim and Salir, respectively. These actions have the collaboration of the SEPNA – Nature and Environment Protection Service of the GNR of Loulé and the Municipal Firefighters.

Simultaneously, the Municipal Civil Protection Service promotes awareness of greater proximity with the population, in population centers in the same parishes, clarifying doubts and distributing leaflets alluding to the same themes.

The legislation requires that the fuel management works must take place until the 15th of March. The fines applied for the absence of this practice were increased to double in relation to the previous year, going from 120 thousand euros to 280 thousand euros.
