Construction work on the cycle path between Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, on the EN122, started this week. The work, which has an extension of about 3 kilometers, will allow, in addition to the access to Vila Real de St. António – Monte Gordo – Castro Marim, access to the interior of the Reserva do Spal.
According to the Chamber of Castro Marim, «the creation of new cycling infrastructure is intended to be interconnected with the sporting and cultural policies and development of the municipality of Castro Marim, in a perspective of valuing the natural, but also the cultural and built heritage».
The municipality explains that "a bicycle path will be created alongside the road, on one of the existing platform to the west, created by the company Águas do Algarve, when the Castro Marim Interceptor Wastewater System was implemented".
Francisco Amaral, Mayor, emphasizes that «a large part of our tourism is senior, a type of public that appreciates nature, likes cycling and getting away from the tourist concept of sun and beach. That is why we have to expand the offer, taking advantage of other resources in the municipality, such as the Sapal Natural Reserve».
This is a work supported by PO CRESC Algarve 2020, PADRE project, supported by Portugal and the European Union, 70% co-financed by FEDER.
The Chamber also adds that "in addition to this cycle path, the project for the cycle path that will connect Castro Marim to Altura, on the EN 125 – 6, the access road to the parish of Altura and to the IC27, should soon move forward."
In this case, it is a cycle path with an extension of about 5 kilometers and its creation is part of the project to improve the road that gives access to the municipality's beaches, namely in the extension and repaving, in the improvement of drainage and in the insertion from a roundabout where there is now an intersection.
