Aljustrel Municipal Museum presents “new” Bronze Age funerary stele

Estela will be presented to the public on January 10th

A Bronze Age funerary stele, found in the summer of 2013 by an agricultural worker, in the parish of S. João de Negrilhos, is already deposited in the Municipal Museum of Aljustrel, where it will be exhibited.

The Alentejo Regional Directorate of Culture recently signed a contract with that Museum for the deposit of this stele, which had been recovered after the State had instituted “a legal proceeding against an archaeologist who improperly owned the piece”. According to the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage, the stele was «recovered already in the sentence execution phase, due to the refusal to surrender» by the archaeologist.

«This is a piece of high archaeological value, either because of the small number of stelae that are known from the Middle Bronze Age, or because of the variety of decorative motifs it presents», explains the Aljustrel City Council.

The public presentation of the funerary stele will take place at the Aljustrel Municipal Museum, on the 10th of January, at 18 pm, with the presence of the mayor of this municipality, the regional director of Culture of Alentejo and the person responsible for the finding.
