Monstrare returns to present cinema on social issues in Loulé

Portuguese production, especially from the Algarve, will be highlighted

The fifth edition of MONSTRARE – International Exhibition of Social Cinema takes place in Loulé, between 16 and 20 January, in an event that combines, with the seventh art, the debate on social issues and issues.

The event takes place between the Cloister of the Convento do Espírito Santo and the Cine-Teatro Louletano, with the projection of short and feature films and moments of debate with the public, around the themes presented. This year, one of the novelties will be the holding of a workshop.

Thus, on the opening day, January 16, Wednesday, at 21 pm, the Convento Auditorium will be the main stage of this event. Short Films Day.

Opening, it will be shown “On the phone with God”, by the Algarve Vera Casaca, followed by the selection Shortcuts Week with the presentation of four short films by students from secondary schools in Loulé and Faro: “Smells like the Young Spirit”, “Full Identity”, “The Sea” and “Extra Hours”.

On the 17th, Thursday, at 21 pm, the Cine-Teatro Louletano receives “As Horas de Luz”, by António Borges Correia, followed by a debate on the topics covered.

The film portrays the problems of aging and disease. Maria da Luz (Paula Só) is waiting for an operation on the cataracts, which almost took her sight. But their dependence will awaken in the neighbors, and in the distant daughter, an opportunity to renew lost ties. «The city of Vila Real de Santo António is filmed with a beauty that invites us to visit it, from the beach, the traditional houses, to the ruins of an old factory».

From 21:00 pm on the 18th, Friday, the doc day, with the screening of two documentaries: “Andar em Frente”, by Helena Winter and Verónica Castro, and “Fracking the Contract”, by Sophie Rousmaniere (a Luso-American co-production).

Made entirely in Baixo Alentejo, “Andar em Frente” is a documentary that reveals that breast cancer is often the beginning of life. Women, husbands and children break the silence to tell in an intimate, moving and courageous way their experience, ownership or proximity, with breast cancer.

Residents of Almodôvar, Beja, Castro Verde, Casével, Ferreira do Alentejo, Mértola and Mina de São Domingos, courageously broke the silence and demonstrated, with their intimate realities, that breast cancer is not just an issue that affects the female body it is a shared struggle that involves the woman, the family and their community.

«Move ahead»

“Fracking the Contract” addresses the theme of gas and oil exploration on the Portuguese coast, namely in the Algarve. Fishermen, mayors, landowners, tourism entrepreneurs and the community in general came together for the first time to fight this threat. The film shows the beauty and cultural traditions of the region, through the eyes of Cláudia Caldeira, a local resident who takes us on a journey of discovery.

After each of the documentaries, a debate will be held with the general public on the topics covered.

In the final stretch of MONSTRARE, on January 19, at 21 pm, the film “Eu, Daniel Blake”, by Ken Loach (United Kingdom/France/Belgium), will be screened at the 00 edition of the Cannes Film Festival .

Diagnosed with a serious heart problem, Daniel Blake, a 59-year-old widower, has medical advice to stop working. But when he tries to receive state benefits that grant him a livelihood, he finds himself entangled in an unfair and embarrassing bureaucracy. Despite the effort to find a way to prove their incapacity, it seems that no one is interested in admitting it. While on hold at a Social Security office, he meets Katie, a single mother of two in need of urgent help, who has recently moved to Newcastle (England). Daniel and Katie, two strangers whose twists and turns have left them without a living, are thus forced to accept help from the food bank. And it's in the midst of despair that they become each other's only hope...

On the 19th and 20th of January, a Screenwriting Workshop will take place in Room 14 of the Convent's Cloister, coordinated by the young Algarvean director and screenwriter Vera Casaca. Admission is free and the opening hours are as follows: 10:00 am to 13:00 pm and from 14:00 pm to 19:00 pm.

«Monstrare», a Latin word that means to make something visible, or to denounce, once again sets the tone for what is the first event in Portugal dedicated exclusively to cinema on social issues.
