Lagos will draw up regulations to help families rent

This measure aims to find solutions for those who have difficulty in renting houses in Lagos, even though they are not from the most vulnerable social strata.

Lagos will start to draw up the Regulation to Support Private Lease, a measure that aims to respond to households that, even not being in extreme need, face difficulties in renting their houses.

The launching of the process for drafting this regulation was unanimously approved at the last Chamber Meeting.

According to the Municipality of Lagos, this is an instrument that stems from the need to diversify housing policies and that «aimed, above all, to respond to households who, despite not experiencing a situation of extreme economic and housing shortage, face major difficulties in to pay a housing lease in the private market or even to be able to start this process of autonomy».

"The regulation – along with other measures already announced by the municipality, such as the construction of new municipal projects – aims to combat the imbalance between demand and housing supply that is registered in the municipality of Lagos, as a result of the growth in tourism, the decline rental housing and the increase in the values of both the real estate market and the rents charged», added the municipality.

A diagnosis prepared in 2018 pointed out that "the difficulty of accessing housing is no longer only found in the most vulnerable social strata, although these are always one of the focuses to which the administration is especially attentive, but also in other segments of the population, including the youngest, the oldest and also those who seek Lagos to live, work or cement their roots, who find it difficult to obtain housing at a price they can afford».
