“Young Water” Contest promotes environmental education once again

This year's contest has two distinct themes

The “Agua Jovem” project, which promotes environmental education for children and young people, is open until March 8th.

This competition is aimed at children and young people who attend pre-school, 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles of Basic Education and students who benefit from selective and additional educational measures. “Agua Jovem” has several modalities: text, drawing, models, video and audio and performance.

The average number of participants is around 400 young people «and this year we don't want it to be different», says Águas do Algarve.

For this year's edition, the contest has two distinct themes. The first is called “Hands that take care of Water – Contributing to the 2030 Agenda”.

As the 1st article of the Universal Declaration of Water Rights says, “water is part of the planet's heritage. Every continent, every people, every nation, every region, every city, every citizen is fully responsible in the eyes of all».

“Through this statement, it is important that every citizen in the world knows how they can contribute to taking care of water. Today, saving is no longer enough: it is necessary to understand, for example, the implications of climate change and the inadequate management of natural resources in the lives of every citizen, but, on the other hand, have a clear idea of the impact of each. one with its water footprint, associated with what is consumed”, says the company Águas do Algarve.

“In this theme, we ask the participants to reflect on the various interdependencies of heritage/water resources with the various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda”, he adds.

The second theme is related to the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, which has an extension of 110 kilometers, from São Torpes, south of Sines, to Burgau (Vila do Bispo).

The objectives of this theme are to raise awareness of the importance of this Natural Park in the local and global context, disseminate and contribute to the preservation of the Natural Park, make known the habitats that support a high biodiversity and understand the importance of ecosystem services present in this Natural Park and particularly those associated with watercourses.

As in all competitions, there will be attractive prizes for the winners of each category, which will be delivered on the day of the Água Jovem 2019 Forum, to be held on March 22, on World Water Day, in Sagres.

All participants will receive a certificate of participation and souvenirs related to the environment. Three winning works will be distinguished in each category, which will have a public presentation in the aforementioned Forum.
