Jorge Viegas, born in Faro, was elected president of the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) last Saturday, December 1st.

As an athlete, Jorge Viegas participated in sprint, motocross and endurance races, such as the emblematic 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

Now, the Farense was elected with 79 out of 101 votes from the electoral college of the international body that oversees the organization of official motorcycling competitions.

"This happy circumstance should be interpreted as an undoubted proof of confidence in the merit and competence of the former president of the National Motorcycling Federation – today the Portuguese Motorcycling Federation," says the Chamber of Faro.

The local authority and its president Rogério Bacalhau congratulate themselves, in a press release, “for this triumph of Jorge Viegas, which is also a recognition of his high value”.

"On the occasion, we leave the wishes of every success in his next four years of FIM presidency, the first assumed by a Portuguese in its history", concludes the Chamber of Faro.
