Bairro da Cruz da Parteira marks its 20th anniversary today

More than a hundred families living in tents received the keys to their first home twenty years ago

20 years ago, more than a hundred families living in tents received keys to their new homes. This Saturday, December 22, Bairro Cruz da Parteira, in Portimão, celebrates its 20th anniversary in a festive atmosphere, from 14 pm, with a snack shared with the residents, delivery of a birthday souvenir made by the children, lots of music and entertainment for all ages.

Built in 1998, within the scope of the Resettlement Program for the population residing in shacks, this municipal district allowed the relocation of 120 households who lived in shacks in the Cabeço do Mocho area or in shacks.

This project had a non-repayment financing of around 50% and the rest with subsidized interest from the National Housing Institute.

In this neighborhood, several cultures coexist, namely the African one, with a special predominance of Cape Verdean; the gypsy and traditional Portuguese culture, currently with a total of about 430 individuals.

It consists of four blocks with 3 floors, two blocks with 9 dwellings per floor and two other blocks with 11 dwellings per floor, in a total of 120 dwellings, under supported lease. Of the 120 dwellings 33 are of typology t1; 43 of typology t2; 24 of typology t3 and 20 of typology t4.

As a support structure for the residents of the neighborhood, there is the Cruz da Parteira Community Center, located in the basement of Block 2, which, within the scope of the Municipality's Community Intervention Program, provides psychosocial support, sociocultural animation and community intervention, with the main objective of provide a healthy occupation of free time in favor of personal and social development, preventing deviant and risky behavior.

Its action aims, on the one hand, to involve the younger population, occupying them in a dynamic and constructive perspective, in a space where they can develop activities that meet their personal and community interests. And on the other hand, intervention with the adult population with special attention to those who are not integrated into a professional activity and to the elderly, in order to prevent social exclusion and isolation.

Since last October, the social intervention project (Re)Viver no meu Bairro has been taking place in Bairro da Cruz da Parteira, which arose from an agreement between the Municipality of Portimão, the Ministry of Internal Administration and the Humanitarian Association of Voluntary Firefighters of Portimao.

Under this Program, the neighborhood now has a multidisciplinary team, working full time, from Monday to Saturday, whose main priority is the prevention of juvenile delinquency and the reduction of social vulnerabilities, in order to mitigate some existing security vulnerabilities.
