Silves falls in the Portuguese Cup but remains proud of reaching the 4th round

Algarvians suffered heavy defeat, but can celebrate the journey made in this edition of the Cup of Portugal

Silves was defeated this Sunday by Rio Ave, in Vila do Conde, and by a heavy 7-0. Even so, no one can take away from the Algarve District Championship team the pride of having reached the 4th round of the competition, where it was the only representative of the region.

The fate of Silves Futebol Clube, which had the support of around a hundred supporters, who traveled to Vila do Conde, began to be dictated early in the game. After 6 minutes, Schmidt put the home team to win. Rio Ave was willing to quickly resolve the issue and extended their advantage shortly after, on 11 minutes, with a goal from Diego Lopes.

The Algarve team was in trouble and the villagers were devilish. Pereira, the goalkeeper of Silves was shining, with some good saves, but the third of Rio Ave ended up appearing in the 25th minute, marked by Gelson Dala. Shortly before, Silves created a good opportunity to reduce the disadvantage, but goalkeeper Léo Jardim denied the goal with a good defense.

Before the break, the northern team had to celebrate for the fourth time, as Schmidt scored twice in the match, in the 45th minute.

In the second half, the game started with a warmer tune. Even so, the Rio Ave was creating some danger near Silves' goal.

The fifth goal only came in the 78th minute, scored by Vinicius. Soon after, on 82 minutes, the player from the Algarve, Gerson, who had just entered, saw the red card, after a tough entry.

Playing with another one, Rio Ave had to put the ball in Silves' goal twice more. In the 89th minute, Vinicius also scored twice. In added time, Lúcio, from Silves, scored an own goal and sealed the 7-0 final.

This was the end of a surprising journey by the modest Algarvian team, which only fell in the fourth round of the Portuguese Cup and against a team from the I League, fighting for places Europeans, after having eliminated Olhanense, in the 1st round, Paredes, in the 2nd, and, finally, Chaves Satellite, in the 3rd round.
