Maritime Police wants vessels to be taken out of a prohibited zone next to the Culatra

A little more than two years ago, the Maritime Authority removed all the boats that were anchored in the Culatra resevoir

The Maritime Police is asking owners of vessels anchored in a prohibited zone, near Ilha da Culatra, to remove them from the site. This initiative, which has been taking place since the 25th of October, aims to "order this space, preventing the permanence of vessels in sensitive areas with an impact on the marine environment, in an area classified as a Natural Park", according to the National Maritime Authority (AMN) .

The Local Command of the Maritime Police has been carrying out the «approach and sensitization of those responsible for recreational vessels, mostly foreigners, who are anchored outside the anchorage area, particularly east of the entrance to the fishing port of Culatra island, in Ria Formosa».

«On vessels where those responsible are not on board, copies of the notice made by the Captain of the Port were posted, in order to alert to the need to remove the vessel», according to AMN.

In 2016, an AMN operation allowed to clean almost completely the bowl of the Breech, an indentation next to the fishing center with the same name as the island, where almost a hundred boats were illegally anchored for 30 years.

This type of action will be repeated in other places within the jurisdiction of the Captaincy of the Port of Olhão, «where there has been a growing presence of pleasure boats at anchor in prohibited areas or parked on the banks».
