Gala returns to celebrate the accordion at Teatro das Figuras

Initiative celebrates 10 years of existence

João Palma, young world champion from Loulé, Hernâni Cerqueira and Pedro Gonçalves are some of the guests at the grand gala “Terra de Acordeão” which takes place this Saturday, November 10, at 21 pm, at Teatro das Figuras, in Faro.

This year, the initiative celebrates 10 years of existence, «providing a very eclectic spectacle with the participation of many awarded young people», as well as the orchestras Folegarve and Folequestra.

«This gala will also have an international touch with the incomparable Michel Sapateado, the Algarve spirit by RitmoFole, with Sérgio Conceição and Silvino Campos, and a moment of authentic musical grandeur with the special participation of the Orquestra Típica e Coral de Alcobaça, consisting of 36 elements and directed by the renowned Aníbal Freire, the first Portuguese champion of the world of Accordion in 1972», explains the organization.

Over a century, Bordeira, a small town belonging to the municipality of Faro, was the birthplace of some of the most renowned accordionists in the country.

Therefore, “Terra de Accordeão” «is a pioneering project in Portugal coordinated by Nelson Conceição and which has been documenting, dignifying and spreading the great authors and accordionists somehow linked to Bordeira through literary publications, exhibitions, colloquia, shows of presentation, record editions and great tribute galas».

In this context, José Ferreiro Pai & Filho, António Madeirinha, João Barra Bexiga, Daniel Rato and Hermenegildo Guerreiro, thus safeguarding more than 500 musical works by these great Algarve authors, at a time when a possible application of the accordion to Intangible Heritage of Humanity was mentioned again.

«The organization is pleased to be a project that brought together various strengths and efforts to get here, taking the opportunity to thank all the entities that supported throughout these years and the approximately 60 accordionists who enhanced this project».

This initiative is promoted by the Parish Council of Santa Bárbara de Nexe and by the Sociedade Recreativa Bordeirense, with the support of the Municipality of Faro and the Association of Accordionists of the Algarve – Mito Algarvio.
