Arame guitars from Portugal and Brazil can be found in S. Martinho das Amoreiras

There will be violas and players from Alentejo, Minho, Beira Baixa, Madeira, Azores and Minas Gerais, in Brazil

The 8th Encounter of Violas de Arame, which will feature violas from all over the continent and islands and also from Brazil, will take place at the Casa do Povo of S. Martinho das Amoreiras, municipality of Odemira, on the 10th and 11th of November.

The initiative aims to enhance and preserve the Portuguese Viola de Arame and is organized by the Center for the Valorization of Viola Campaniça and Cante de Improviso.

“This is intended to be an important action to rescue and dignify regional culture, aimed at all musicians, ethnographers and curious people who express an interest in traditional music”, explain the organizers.

The meeting will be attended by Viola Campaniça (Alentejo), Viola Braguesa (Minho), Viola Beiroa (Beira Baixa), Viola de Arame (Madeira), Viola da Terra (Azores) and Viola Caipira (Minas Gerais/Brazil), fingered by Pedro Mestre and Carlos Loução, José Barros, Ricardo Fonseca, Vítor Sardinha, Bruno Bettencourt and Chico Lobo, respectively.

The spontaneous way in which these violas “dialogue” allows us to understand their common popular origin and the differences that have been introduced to them by the communities that use them. From roda dances to religious festivals, passing through the despiques, wire-string guitars are the traditional popular instrument of choice.

The presence of these players – all excellent performers – is an opportunity not only to appreciate the sound but also the history of their guitars.

The Conversations will be highlighted, featuring the musicians/players involved, as well as some guest researchers, namely Ivan Vilela (Instrumentalist and Professor at the University of São Paulo, Brazil), Salwa Castelo-Branco (Professor and Ethnomusicologist at the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centro of Studies in Music and Dance at Universidade Nova de Lisboa), Domingos Morais (Professor/Ethnomusicologist at IELT – Institute for Traditional Literature Studies at Universidade Nova de Lisboa) and Manuel Morais (Musicologist and Associate Professor at the University of Évora).

To complete the program on Saturday, on the 10th, there will be the show “Violas de Arame Concerto”, at the hour, at the Centro Social de Amoreiras-Gare, with free admission.

On November 11th, Workshops will be held, first with the builders of Viola Campaniça, Daniel Luz, Orlando Trindade and Fábrica de Cordofones Arte & Música, and then dedicated to each of the Violas present at the meeting.

Registration for the workshops must be made via email [email protected]

The Meeting of Violas de Arame will end, at 16 pm on the 11th, with a session of Cante de Improviso: Despique e Baldão, accompanied by Viola Campaniça, at Taberna do Lagar, S. Martinho das Amoreiras, followed by a Magusto.

During the two days, an exhibition of Chordophones can be visited, at the Casa do Povo of S. Martinho das Amoreiras, which will give due prominence to Viola Campaniça.
