A proposal by the PCP's parliamentary group to put an end to the demolitions of housing in the Ria Formosa barrier islands was rejected in the Assembly of the Republic by the deputies of the PS, PSD, CDS and PAN, this Friday.

The PCP's draft resolution recommended the Government to "put an end to the demolitions of housing in the Ria Formosa barrier islands, in particular, those announced for the beginning of November 2018 in the housing centers of the Ria Formosa Faroof the Hangares of the island of Culatra».

By rejecting the proposal, accuse the communists, “these four parties confirm their intention to proceed with the demolitions in the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa and expel the local communities from these islands, a process initiated by the previous PSD/CDS government and to which the the current PS government continues”.

“By resuming the demolitions, the PS and its Government are betraying the commitments and promises made to the local communities of the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa. When the previous PSD/CDS government began the process of demolishing housing on these islands, the PS, in opposition, voted in favor of the PCP's proposals aimed at putting an end to this process. Now, in the Government, the PS is already in favor of demolitions and insists on carrying them out», adds the PCP.

The communists again maintained that the demolitions, despite being carried out under the «pretext of an alleged intention to renaturalize the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa», serve, in their view, to «prepare the way to deliver one of the most valuable portions of the national coastline (of the few that escaped in the Algarve) to the eagerness of large private interests, so that they exploit this valuable natural heritage for their benefit, sacrificing the rights of populations, their habits and livelihoods and their own nature conservation to that goal'.
