Maritime Police of Olhão seizes and returns 50 kilos of razor clams to the sea

Maritime Police also detected a boat with irregularities

About 50 kilos of razor clams, illegally caught, were seized this Monday, October 22, by the local Command of the Maritime Police of Olhão.

The arrest was made as part of an inspection in the interior of the Ria Formosa «aimed at the detection of individuals engaged in illegal bivalve harvesting using scuba diving equipment, as well as for the possible detection of seahorse capture».

According to the Maritime Authority, "during the operation, suspicious movements of vessels were detected that led to the seizure of two diving bottles, a diving suit and two containers containing about 50 kilos of razor clams", which were returned to their natural habitat.

In the same action, it was also detected a pleasure boat that had no means of rescue and external inscriptions.

The operation involved three elements of the Maritime Police and two elements of the Captaincy of the Port of Olhão, supported by two boats and a personal watercraft.
