Roman mosaics from the Ruins of Milreu receive conservation work

Restoration works cost 30 thousand euros

A set of mosaics from the Roman Ruins of Milreu, located in Estoi, in the municipality of Faro, is being the target of conservation and restoration works, promoted by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

The mosaics that are undergoing intervention correspond to a phase of renovation and expansion of the Villa Romana in the XNUMXrd and XNUMXth centuries AD and include “the famous pavement “of the fish and the smiling squid” and the floors of the cubicula, which are attached to it”.

This intervention aims at «the conservation and preservation of the set, as well as improving the reading and understanding of this important artistic set», explains the Regional Directorate of Culture.

The conservation and restoration works are under the responsibility of the firm “Nova Conservação – Restoration and Conservation of Artistic and Cultural Heritage, Lda” and should last five months.

The works will cost around 30 thousand euros and are part of the Conservation Project Requalification of the Roman Ruins of Milreu, which amounts to close to 530 thousand euros and which was approved by the CRESC Algarve 2020 Programme, with a forecast of execution until 2020.

According to the Regional Directorate of Culture, «in the work in progress, actions are being carried out to clean the mosaics, treat weeds, apply consolidation mortars and repoint the joints. The walls and wall coverings of the compartments that make up the mosaic panels will also be subject to repair and consolidation work».

The works will condition circulation in the Ruins of Milreu, a fact that leads the body that oversees the monument to ask for the visitors' understanding.
