Lagos celebrates the Municipality Day and receives a delegation of Alcácer Quibir

Municipal Holiday is celebrated in honor of the patron saint São Gonçalo de Lagos

Lagos commemorates the Municipality Day on 27 October and, to mark the date, there will be a visit by a delegation from Alcácer Quibir, the city with which Lagos signed a twinning agreement, and a concert by Paulo de Carvalho. 

This year the commemorations, which take place between the 26th and 28th of October, begin in a more international spirit, as the first initiative concerns the official reception of the delegation of Ksar El Kebir (Alcácer Quibir) and formalization of the Twinning Agreement.

The delegation will be received at the XXI Century City Hall Auditorium, on the 26th, at 11:30 am. Lagos twinned with Alcácer Quibir (Ksar El Kebir) earlier this year, when the Sul Informação accompanied in Morocco.

This twinning agreement «has as its main objective the development of permanent links between both Municipalities, leading to a deepening of knowledge of local cultural identities, in terms of traditions, customs, historical memory and heritage, to the exchange of cultural and heritage activities and events and artistic and joint participation in projects of common interest», explains the Câmara de Lagos.

On the 26th, at 21 pm, Paulo de Carvalho brings the show “Informal” to the stage at the Centro Cultural de Lagos.

The highlight of these celebrations will be on the 27th, Municipal Holiday, which includes the traditional Ceremony of Hastear das Bandeiras, with hymns performed by the Band of the Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1º de Maio, from 9:30 am, at Praça Gil Eanes.

The Religious Festivals of São Gonçalo de Lagos are scheduled for 10:00 am, with an outdoor mass and a procession in Honor of the Patron Saint.

The solemn session, scheduled for 15:30 pm, at the Centro Cultural de Lagos, will count with the presence of representatives of twinned municipalities and pay homage to the writer Glória Marreiros and the athlete Diogo Marreiros.

The author and social researcher will receive the Medal of Municipal Merit – Gold Degree, while Diogo Marreiros will be awarded the Silver Degree.

On this day, admission to the municipal museum spaces (Santo António Church, Slave Market and Fort Ponta da Bandeira) are free, as well as to the Frente Ribeirinha car park.

The commemorations end with the commented visit “To the Meeting of Time and Places of São Gonçalo de Lagos”, taking place on the 28th, and with the 8th Meeting of Children and Youth Choirs, taking place at Igreja das Freiras at 15:30.
