Maritime Authority advises precaution when going to the beach in October

Bathing season ends on 15th October

«Never turn your back on the sea, keep an eye on the children permanently» and «pay special attention to the watermen». These are some of the advice given by the National Maritime Authority for going to the beach until 15 October, the official end of the bathing season.

«The bathing period has already ended in most Portuguese beaches, so that many beaches no longer have permanent assistance by lifeguards, lack of signs and equipment to assist bathers, so it is essential that the population adopt a behavior of safety', says the Maritime Authority.

Respecting an interval of three hours after a normal meal before going to the baths, not turning your back on the sea and paying attention to the waterers are also advice given.

As for the agueiros, “they can be fatal and cause death by drowning. You must not panic or try to beat the current. If you enter a waterway, you must ask for help and swim laterally (parallel) to the shoreline until you no longer feel the effect of the current. Then, try to get out of the water in a place away from this current», he concludes.
